Just start reading.Īn honored prof of mine, who is more Cavellian than Wittgensteinian, used to tell me that when reading Wittgenstein keep in mind that Ludwig's goal was to become satisfied enough to quit doing philosophy, as if he was searching for the perfect bite of ice cream that would cause him to not want to eat ice cream anymore because it was so perfect, everything else would just ruin it and be imitating its perfection. Would you read an in-depth analysis of a movie, or would you just go watch the movie? That's like going to your friend who watches a lot of movies and saying "Hey dude, tell me every joke that was in 'This is the End'" and afterwords going to see the movie. In fact, I suggest reading the primary text of anything before reading what other people say about it first. If you get lost, keep going with the intention to read it again. And read him as a piece of literature in the uprising of modernism. Read it as though he is speaking directly to you as a teacher-student relationship. But don't read it like you would Other analytical philosophy. Pick up the Philosophical Investigations and just start reading it. I read all the comments and I'm really not sure why people are so discouraging. ![]()
